This year I asked Kayleigh what she wanted to be for Halloween. I had some suggestions, but she was adamant she wanted to be candy! After weeks of trying to figure out how I was going to pull that off, she learned her friend was going to go as Batman and changed her mind - she wanted to be Batman, too! This was much easier for me and decided Lexi would be the cutest Harley Quinn (I did the new version from the Suicide Squad movie since I figured it would be easier for me)
Instead of just buying costumes, I prefer to make and piece them together out of things we already own.
For Kayleigh's costume, I made the batman mask out of felt (2 layers of felt that I sewed together around the edges and hot glued elastic to) and the cape was some leftover black canvas I had on hand that I cut out and did a simple zig-zag stitch on the edged to keep it from fraying. The Batman shirt was bought at Walmart for under $7 and the skirt was a gift from a friend earlier this year (I think she got it at goodwill for $2)
For Lexi's Harley Quinn costume, I bought a blank red & white baseball tee off Amazon for less than $7 and designed the "Daddy's Lil Monster" text as close as possible to match the original. Then I used my cricut and some heat transfer vinyl to put the design onto the shirt. The shorts were just a pair she already owned and I had some tights on underneath them. I also bought hair chalk to give her the red and blue pigtails. (The baseball bat in the above picture was something we bought for the girls to play with at the end of summer, but I completely forgot to bring it for the photos. Whomp whomp. Thankfully a chain hanging on the door worked awesome as a prop.)
Total, I'm sure the costumes cost me less than $20. Not too bad, and everything can get used and worn again once Halloween is over!!
The girls love their costumes, too! Kayleigh would wear hers everyday if I let her. Lexi thinks having the color in her hair is pretty neat and will constantly play with her pigtails if I let her (and get the chalk dust everywhere!) We got a lot of cute looks letting them run around Main Street St. Charles when I was taking pictures.
I'll have another post of all out Halloween shenanigans coming up here shortly. We really seemed to get into the holiday spirits this year!
